EASTERN GATE. ARTPOLE-CRIMEA
October 15-16
, Bakhchisaray

The festival takes place on the weekend just in the middle of autumn. In Crimea it is the time of observation, consciousness and awakening; the time of mellow fruits – quince, nut, and pomegranate; the time that gives another opportunity to experience summer without noisy tourists, nightclubs and furious heat. “Eastern Gates. Artpole-Crimea” is a festival-excursion through a garden city being home to splendid Hansaray, Uspensky Monastery, Medieval University Zincirli medrese, cave city of Çufut Qale, masjids, old cemeteries and fountains. The festival is designed for those in search for deeper understanding with the outworld. And this will be encouraged by remarkable history of the city where since ancient times lived people of various nationalities and religions; where nowadays you can hear the Crimean Tatar, Ukrainian, Russian, Armenian, Greek, and Polish languages.

During these days the Crimean craftsmen will share their secrets in pottery, carpet weaving, embroidering, and gold-work. They will also introduce activities peculiar of this territory such as traditional coffee and eastern sweet stuff making, mehendi, gathering and storing herbs, dancing, and playing traditional musical instruments. So, all the guests will have an opportunity to establish direct contact with the city.

The musical program consists of two parts. The first is dedicated to the Crimean peoples (traditional music of the Crimean Tatar, the Chinhine, the Greek and the Osman), and the second is devoted to the international world-music program: Cankisou from Czech Republic, Orkiestra św. Mikołaja from Poland, Port Mone from Belarus, DakhaBrakhaand Zira from Ukraine.

The participants of the land-art program are well-known Ukrainian artists Zhanna Kadyrova, Andrij Hurenko, , Myroslav Vaida and others. The public will be introduced to geliograffiti – fire drawing in space, a direction being brand-new for “ArtPole” and completely harmonious in the context of Bakhchisaray city. The artists Volodymir and Tetyana Bakhtov along with the interested public will create illusive fire images with torches reproducing disappeared architectural objects or creating chimerical fire forests, streams and shallops. The action itself will remind of a mystic dance though the cameras will fix accomplished fire figures.

The main stage of the festival is the Eastern Gates of Çufut Qale where you can observe sun rising and setting, numerous mountain ridges and the sea far off. And the main stage for geliograffiti is the valley Ashlama-Dere located beneath Çufut Qale. “Ashlama-Dere” in word-to-word translation from the Tartar language means “where the grafted trees grow”. This is the valley of gardens where was situated khan’s first palace – Ashlama-Saray. “With the Crimean Tatars, grafting of shoots of old trees and of wild forest trees is considered to be a matter of course,” says Volodymir Bakhtov. “The attempt to ‘graft’ contemporary ideas with artistic methods in so much intricate historical context of south-west Crimea may turn out to be both unexpectedly fruitful and desperately venturesome just as trees grafting is. And the Crimean Tatars always took along the instrument for trees grafting and continuously experimented. Care of the artists for historical and natural landscape will become an essential instrument in its new interpretation.”
